My Family Culture

If I was evacuated to another country I would take:

1.  Bible...this represents my faith and the core of my beliefs
2.  Photo album representing the history of my life thus far
3.  Some U.S. credential that represents my identity.

Trying to communicate the meaning behind my items I would first attempt with verbal language and gestures.  My emotions and actions could carry some of the feelings and meanings behind the items.

If made to choose only one item I would, without doubt, keep my Bible.  It is the source of strength and faith that I would need at a time such as that.

Blending cultures can require us to adapt in a way that forces us to leave behind important parts of our lives.  This exercise encourages me to work harder to show value to each family's culture and differences.  Working to include their culture can support their attempts to maintain their own heritage, beliefs and traditions.

  1. Hello Heather,

Great choices and ideals on how to share who you are and what you believe in. It would be important to share who we were before such a huge change were to happen in our lives. Let's all pray that we never see that day that we would have to leave everything behind us.

  2. I agree totally. I chose to also take my bible and ablums. Beihng that I don't know where i'm going I want to be prepared if they don't share the beliefs I do. My albums are to always remember friends and family that are no longer. Great choices....

  3. Thank you for your post! I chose to bring a Bible as well because my faith is very important to me and it helps me get through anything that may come my way that may cause hardship. I like that you would bring a form of identification. I did not think to bring any items like that. Identification could be very helpful during my assimilation to another country because it could provide me with access to resources as well provide me another way to preserve my culture.
